James Patrick “J.P.” Mohn was born on October 4, 1944, in Connecticut to Stanley and Gertrude Mohn. The eldest of five children, he died on July 8, 2026, after a long illness.
J.P. grew up in Pennsylvania, where he attended Catholic school and enjoyed an active childhood filled with football, soapbox derbies, and racing cars and motorcycles. After graduating, he worked for several years in a Pennsylvania steel mill. His love of motorcycles, racing, and travel eventually drew him west to California.
Over the years, J.P. lived in Oxnard, CA building boats, San Francisco, CA where he started working on motorcycles for the public, and Albion, CA where he enjoyed some of the 60’s fun before making his home in Fort Bragg, CA. Throughout the moves he’d occasionally take a break and go to Washington state for extended periods of time to pick apples. Once he settled in Fort Bragg, he worked in Noyo Harbor building boats and later opened his own business, Fort Bragg Cycle Supply, which became his home away from home. He took great pride in building fast-custom motorcycles and repairing the bikes entrusted to his shop. He built a reputation around the world for being a great motorcycle mechanic and even two journalists from Hot Bike Japan fly all the way over from Japan to see his shop and interview him.
He was an avid racer himself and held many records with the All Harley Drag Racing Association for many years. His love of racing and fast motorcycles eventually led to him mentoring his niece Tania and watching her race one of his custom-built motorcycles. Together they earned many national titles together and inspired many racers across the country.
J.P. loved hitting the road on his motorcycle. His adventurous spirit carried him into Canada aboard his 1948 Harley-Davidson Panhead and on several trips across and around the country. On one memorable journey, he and his partner, Rosalie Stanley, rode to Sturgis. On the return trip, they filled their saddlebags with rocks that would later become part of the fireplace in the home they were building together. He thought is was hilarious his bike was weighed down and slowed down by a bunch of rocks.
J.P.’s laughter was unmistakable and could be heard above any crowd. Beneath his larger-than-life presence was a tender side known best by those closest to him. He loved his family deeply, and if J.P. called you a friend, you were his friend for life.
J.P. was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Gertrude Mohn; his daughter, Kimberly; his brothers, Buster and Michael; his significant other, Rosalie Stanley; and his nephew, Paul Jasch.
He is survived by his brother, David (Paul) Mohn; his sister, Mary (Julian) Jasch; his stepdaughter, Jenna (Evan) Domenici; his grandsons, Rocco and Santo; and his friend, Judy Valadao.
At J.P.’s request, no services were held. He now rests beside his parents in Pennsylvania. He is home now- a place he cherished and loved deeply.
