Herbert Brookes, age 90 of Morrisville, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Chandler Hall in Newtown, PA. Born in Leek, Staffordshire England, Mr. Brookes served in England’s Royal Air Force before immigrating to the US with his family in 1961. He resided in Morrisville for more than 50 years before moving to Langhorne, PA 3 years ago.
Son of the late James Henry and Sarah Ellen (Bowcock) Brookes, and husband of the late Julia Marie (Purdy) Brookes, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Karen and Patrick Kirk of Mechanicsburg, PA: two sons and daughters-in-law Gordon J. and Esther Brookes of Holland, MA, and Stephen and Susan Brookes of Feasterville, PA; and four grandchildren, Kaylin Elizabeth (Ben) Acri and Michael James Kirk; and Ryan James and Joseph Stephen Brookes.
Prior to retirement he was employed as a sales manager for over 40 years with a number of retail sales companies including Lit Brothers, Herman Spiegle, Macy’s, and Croydon Mattress Factory. A former member of the Morrisville Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and sang in the choir; Herbert was most recently a member of the Langhorne United Methodist Church.
Following retirement he served many years as a school crossing guard for Grandview Elementary School in Morrisville. A member of the Fairless Hills Elks, he served as Chaplain overseeing their veteran’s functions. Herbert enjoyed woodworking, riding his bicycle and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was very proud of his family mantra, “Hearts of Oak”.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 4:30 – 6 PM at J. Allen Hooper Funeral Chapel, 41 W. Trenton Ave., Morrisville, PA 19067; followed immediately by a funeral service at 6 PM. His interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions in Herbert’s name be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org; or a veteran’s charity of your choice.
As Herb would say at his farewells..... Carry a good light, May it always burn bright, With a song in your heart.
