Gertrude K. Godwin, age 88 of Yardley, PA, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Chandler Hall Hospice in Newtown, PA. Born in Manhattan, Gertrude was raised in New York and moved to Los Angeles in 1975. Nineteen years later, she moved to Princeton until 2002, when she settled in Yardley.
Mrs. Godwin had been employed as an executive assistant with the Atomic Energy Commission for over 20 years. She then worked as an executive sales associate with CNA Insurance Company in Los Angeles for 20 years. Following her retirement, she also worked part time at Macy’s in the Quakerbridge Mall
She was a devout Christian and was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Yardley. She also attended Shiloh Baptist Church in Trenton, NJ, and Calvary Full Gospel Church in Fairless Hills. If you knew her, one thing was clear….she loved to shop, always finding the perfect bargains to give to her family. An avid reader and gardener, Gertrude also enjoyed traveling, especially to North Carolina and California. She enjoyed exercising, mainly swimming and yoga, and various workout programs. Once an opera singer and choir member, she enjoyed singing in church. Additionally, Mrs. Godwin volunteered her time at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne.
Daughter of the late Leon and Edna (Hudson) Blake, and wife of the late Joseph Richard Godwin, Sr., she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Joseph Richard, Jr. and Eileen Godwin of Yardley, a sister Cynthia Nieves of Zebulon, NC, two grandchildren Andrew Joseph Godwin and Sarah Elizabeth Godwin, eight nieces and a nephew, Sharon Roberts, Beverly Johnson, Lorraine Godwin, Vernel Williams, Scharolyn Godwin, Rosalyn Ligon, Kenneth Leacock, Lakesha Crowder and Tanisha Atwater, as well as a host of cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 12 Noon at the First Baptist Church of Morrisville, 50 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Morrisville, PA 19067. The Rev. John Saunders, Pastor of the Community Baptist Church of Yardley, will officiate.
The family will greet guests from 11 AM -12 Noon at the church.
Gertrude’s interment will be held on Friday, August 30, 2019 at 10:30 AM in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the J. Allen Hooper Funeral Chapel, Morrisville, PA.
